TLF’s Edu thru Exchange- Scenario Series # 2. Impact of COVID 19 on Higher education –
There are interesting and comprehensive studies on Impact of Covid 19 on education such as OECD’s, Dr. Pravat Kumar Jena of IGNOU’s research paper on India impacts available on Researchgate to name a few , ranging from student debt to issues around digital learning and teaching .
Distance learning had already gone digital (such as IGNOU in India ) and also with accreditation in letter and spirit? reported to be accepted by employers and universities . With the global cha cha cha of opening economies and having to backtrack with the spread of Covid 19 cases ,the education sector is as sensitive to these fluctuations as is all else. These do have disruptive impacts on the lives of learners teachers , homes ,parents and institutions. Even in a vaccine scenario there are many imponderables about everyone being safe and a conquest a la small pox etc.. The transitory periods would be greatly facilitated by more sophisticated video conferencing technologies allowing possibilities of simultaneous instead of queued participation as well as holographic video conferencing with faces of all visible like in those sci fi movies!! Goes without saying -Better broadband, Internet access and for almost all- ideally!
It would be nice to have your ideas, thoughts on the Higher education scenarios ahead- Vocational education too which will have its own set of challenges.
Specifically would students be waiting for the good old campus experience or quite happy with digital content delivery wherever & Hybrid models ?
Would you have any suggestions on how interactive experience deficits can be addressed
Are students happy on no monitoring of attendance or would be happy to keep their cameras on during class. Should students owe this courtesy to the teachers ? what is your take on this.
Do you think self study and more reading will increase with the current modes of educational engagement?
Any other points you would like to make.
